When we think about gratitude, it’s easy to focus on the big things—major breakthroughs, life-changing events, and monumental blessings. And while those moments certainly deserve our thanks, what if gratitude wasn’t just reserved for the big stuff? What if we found it in the small, everyday moments that are easy to overlook?
Think about it. The warmth of coffee on a cool morning, the buzz of a text from a friend just when you needed it, or that peaceful pause right before bedtime when the world feels quiet and still. These moments may seem small, but they are packed with meaning. They remind us that God’s goodness isn’t just found in mountaintop experiences, but in the ordinary rhythms of life.
Gratitude helps us slow down. It’s a way of noticing the beauty hidden in the busyness. When we choose to pause and say, “Thank you,” even for the little things, we begin to see the hand of God at work in ways we might have missed before. It shifts our perspective. Instead of waiting for the next big blessing, we learn to live with open hands, embracing the small joys scattered throughout our day.
The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” Notice it says in all circumstances, not for all circumstances. That means gratitude isn’t about pretending life is always perfect—it’s about finding something good even in the middle of challenges. Maybe it's the kindness of a stranger when you're having a tough day or the comfort of knowing that God’s presence is with you, no matter what you're facing.
As we step into this season, let’s start by making space for gratitude. Not just on Sundays or during Thanksgiving but every day. Let’s be the kind of people who say “thank you” often—to God and to those around us. When we embrace gratitude as a way of life, we become more aware of how deeply loved and cared for we are.
So, what are the small things you can thank God for today? Maybe it’s the crisp autumn air, a friend’s encouragement, or simply the gift of another day. Whatever it is, take a moment to pause, breathe, and say, “Thank you.”
